It's not a miracle ingredient, nothing is, but the research behind it is unusually solid, especially for the stubborn, deep pigmentation that shows up on Indian skin tones.

What it actually does

Tranexamic acid started out as a surgical drug for reducing bleeding. It found its way into dermatology almost by accident, when doctors noticed patients taking it orally for other reasons were also seeing their melasma fade. That observation eventually turned into decades of research on topical and oral use for hyperpigmentation specifically.

The mechanism is more specific than most brightening ingredients. The ingredient is water-soluble and absorbs well in serum form. It layers fine with most other actives, though stacking it with very high concentrations of vitamin C or multiple exfoliating acids in one step can irritate sensitive skin.
